Energy and Place Project
Essential Questions:
- How does energy production and consumption impact place?
- How does your sense of place, environmental ethic and understanding of our energy needs influence your perception and decisions relating to energy production and consumption?
Project Refection
Over this past month my perspective has changed drastically about radiation. I used to think it would make you glow and grow a third eye after being exposed to it. I now understand the three main types of radiation; alpha, beta, and gamma. Alpha radiation cannot pass through paper, beta cannot pass through wood, and gamma cannot pass through a few inches of lead. When you are exposed to radiation you will not grow another arm, but your children may have birth defects, due to the change in DNA. I learned that radiation can cause cancer but also eliminate it. I performed a lab that studied photographic paper and sunscreen and found that solar radiation is easily preventable by applying sunscreen to exposed areas.
The research that I put into my Infographic taught me who has solar panels, why we have them, what they are used for, and how they work. The few facts that surprised me was that Germany has the highest amount of solar panels in the world, compared to other countries. I also learned that solar panels produce energy by creating an electric current made from different metals reacting to one another, and the solar ray then knocks off the electrons in the current which results in electrons bouncing around in the photo voltaic cell and that creates electricity.
